How many times a day, do you have an urge to check your phone? Its hard to keep count of how many times you get that sensation to check your cell phone but you could estimate that it would be close to 409 times a day! To some people this is not even close to how many times they check theirs! It’s hard to imagine that we use to not have all these electronics. If you take a moment and really think about it, we have a much easier life than many other people ever had or are now living. To explore the idea of not having as many ways of communicating, I decided to take the pledge to not text for 5 weeks. Evidently, during the past few weeks it has become harder to communicate with my friends and family. I believe the thing that made this pledge hard to keep was that I am involved in many extra-curricular activities, and sometimes it’s hard to get my father to answer his phone because of his occupation. I think that texting makes things a lot easier when you can’t speak to someone face to face or on the phone. Usually I don’t think very deep about how lucky I am to even have a cell phone. This project has made me realize that I am kind of dependent on having a phone. Knowing this I feel disappointed in myself because I will sit there for a very long time just texting. Yet, I have never even thanked my dad for getting me a phone over and over again, even when I just break them and “recycle” them. Living in a developed nation makes it easier to forget about how fortunate we are to having a cell phone or any high tech electronic devices available for us. This is so because almost everyone has them, and over half of the people don’t even know about the effects cell phones have on our planet Earth. In many countries they have cellular devices but if you visit Japan you would be surprised how many people use a cell phone has. When in Japan your cell phone isn’t just a way to communicate but to do many other things. Such as, order a cheeseburger from your local McDonalds, watch a movie on the go, check up on your favorite radio stations, and even play games like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Since they have made all these improvements many people of all ages have been getting phones. The same thing has happened in America. Yet, the cell phone companies in America are less innovative. But through the differences there are a few similarities. The big one is Disposal! Something a lot of us should do is RECYCLE! But there are some disadvantages to donating old electronics to some developing countries. Recycling is a great thing in improving our environment but, be careful what you send. Because when you think you have erased everything off of your cell phone or computer, you could be wrong. People can still find private information off your used appliances. That’s not the only risk, there’s also the small exposure to radiation the phone has. These could be a big concern to people living in a developed nation but to some people in poorer counties, it might not matter. Fortunately, more and more developing countries are getting cell phones. Phone companies have provided cheaper phones and usage fees. As a result of this a larger amount of people can stay connected. Having cell phones could possibly help grow the job communities in those areas of the world. Cell phones could really expand the social aspect in these countries. It’s noticeable that there are many good things about having cell phones but what about the bad? Well in some countries lots of the people work disposing of old cell phones, computers, and televisions. Because they have to melt/burn the material, there is a great amount of smoke. This exposes families living nearby, to potential sicknesses. So, through the good and the bad, what’s your opinion on cell phones? Are they worth the risks? Before you make a decision on how important cell phones really are, don’t you think you should know a little more about the phone itself? Well here are some insights about the highly used cellular device. You often hear or see in cell phone commercials that the phone is 3G or 4G.
